Long before we had modern neuroscience, artists were creating works to inspire people and shape culture. Today complex brain imaging scans show us just how art changes the physiology of our brains. The mere act of observing something beautiful stimulates pleasure centers within the brain. This increases blood flow by up to 10% in the frontal cortex leading to an elevated mood. You will be inspired to learn the many psychological and health benefits of art in your life.
The blood flow increased for a beautiful painting just as it increases when you look at somebody you love. It tells us art induces a feel good sensation direct to the brain. – Professor Semir Zeki, chair in neuroaesthetics at University College London
Observing Art
Mirror Neurons fire both when a person acts and when a person observes the action performed by another. This brings us back to a very basic concept in human evolution which involves modeling. When you observe a profound piece of art your brain fires similar neurons that the artist did when they created it. This creates new neural pathways in your brain and stimulates a state of inspiration. This sense of being drawn into a painting is called “embodied cognition”.
Art accesses some of the most advanced processes of human intuitive analysis and expressivity and a key form of aesthetic appreciation is through embodied cognition, the ability to project oneself as an agent in the depicted scene,
– Christopher Tyler, director of the Smith-Kettlewell Brain Imaging Center
This explains why we feel like we’re dreaming when we look at impressionists like Claude Monet. We can even have an ecstatic vision while looking at a painting by Alex Grey. The ability of art, combined with our own imagination, to transport us to other realms is astounding. Artists have the ability to show us new worlds. But we shouldn’t put them on a pedestal because each of us is an artist.
Making art activates the whole brain and can foster integration of emotional, cognitive, and sensory processes.

Creating Art
The act of creating art is also therapeutic which has been the impetus for the art therapy movement. Every one of us saw the world like artists as children invoking our imagination. We have the ability to bring back this powerful form of expression and self-healing if we allow ourselves to. You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy smearing paint on a canvas. It is a worthwhile activity to let your pleasure centers light up like a child.
Art therapy, sometimes called expressive art or art psychology, encourages self-discovery and emotional growth. It is a two-part process, involving both the creation of art and the discovery of its meaning.
– Paula Ford-Martin
The Brain on Art
Engaging with art can shift brainwave activity, thus creating states of relaxation or heightened focus. For example:
- Alpha Waves (Relaxation): Observing or creating art increases alpha brainwave activity, this induces a calm yet alert state of mind. It fosters introspection that has a similar effect on the brain as meditation
- Theta Waves (Creativity): Creating art, especially in free-flowing or abstract forms, increases theta waves. This brain state is linked to creative insights and emotional healing. (learn more about brain waves here)
Art also stimulates the release of key neurotransmitters and hormones that affect mood and cognition. Dopamine is released when we engage with aesthetically pleasing art. This “feel-good” neurotransmitter enhances mood, motivation, and focus. Serotonin and Oxytocin are released when we participate in collaborative art projects thus eliciting feelings of connection and well-being. Art can also evoke strong emotions that release endorphins which help alleviate physical and emotional pain.
Art as a Spiritual Path
Modern Visionary Artists recognize that art inspires community, is educational, and has the capacity to elicit spiritual revelations. Painting together in groups and painting live at musical events, these artists are allowing participants in on their creative process. Even the finest pieces of art have many moments when the artist isn’t satisfied or needs to paint over something. Having the opportunity to witness this is revealing for each of us on our spiritual journey.
Artist Alex Grey has opened Cosm in New York which is being called a Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. Within the Visionary Art Movement is the idea that creativity itself is a path to the divine. This includes creating art, gathering around/celebrating art and creating communities that foster creative expression in all of its forms. Creativity may be one of the best things about being human. Art can be a great teacher for us on this evolutionary journey.
To awaken and catalyze the spiritual path of each person by providing access to the highest mystic truth through art and creative action. – Cosm Core Value
Art Heals Communities
We are surrounded by billboards and advertisements that use art to persuade us to buy things. Corporations know the power of art. It is also important to have non-commercial interests decorating our public spaces too. That’s why there’s now a large movement towards beautifying communities with murals that contain cultural relevance.
Crime reduction, enhanced community cohesion, and improved public health are just some of the benefits of public art. A 2018 study in Environment and Behavior examined how murals in Philadelphia reduced vandalism and fostered safer neighborhoods. The Mural Arts Philadelphia program reported a 35% reduction in vandalism in areas with murals compared to similar neighborhoods.
In Los Angeles, the Community Redevelopment Agency introduced murals in areas with high gang violence. This lead to a measurable decrease in graffiti and criminal activity because the murals created a shared cultural identity. Art installations also attract tourism, businesses, and residents, leading to safer and more vibrant neighborhoods. Imagine how we can create a more peaceful, vibrant world by surrounding ourselves with beautiful art.
Wouldn’t it be great if scientists, politicians, and spiritual practitioners gathered around art to discuss creating a better world? Visual art can heal us, inspire us, and alter our brain chemistry leaving us filled with inspiration and love. What are some ways that you will invoke art and creativity for your own spiritual journey?
